about

I honor the Gamilaraay nation, of whose land this song was received through. I honor the Ngāi Tahu peoples, of whose land I sit on writing this.

Australia is a song written by the land, for the people.
It is understood in Native communities all over the world, that earth gives life to everything.

It is the land that governs us, not the other way around. There is no concept of ownership, there is no way to treat the land with anything other than respect and gratitude.
In Australia, and all other countries across this globe, Aboriginal communities are the most affected by the parasitic-like colonialism of the past 500 years. Environmental devastation is one of the major players in the decimation of Aboriginal/Native communities globally.

My privilege has taken me to many places on this planet, the Pilliga Forest in New South Wales being one of them. A sparsely populated area that was once cared for by the Gamilaraay peoples, now divided into national forest and private farmland.
The remaining Aboriginal watch as their ancestral burial grounds are coal seam gas mined by large oil/gas companies that have enough money to brush the harm they're inflicting under the rug. Aluminum, arsenic, barium, noron, lead, nickel, uranium are just a handful of compounds they've found in their water supply in recent years.
As we reach the point of no return in the degradation of sacred land, we look to our Aboriginal communities for the answers. We realize the very people we've oppressed are the ones who can save us.

In order to protect this land, we must raise the voices of the people who have the knowledge and answers. Reparations must be made and land must be returned. We must decolonise our hearts and heads.

Please take a minute after listening to check out how you can assist in treaty, advocacy, and solidarity with actions to promote, defend and support Native peoples and land rights in Australia. I’ve included some links below.

And furthermore, please check out this map https://native-land.ca/ to find out about the land you're on and how you can assist in the amplification of Native voices and land rights in your area.

My wish for this song is that it reminds you there is no separation between you and the land. The pain we inflict upon it, is the pain we inflict upon ourselves.

lyrics

Lyrics:

I woke up from my dream to a figure standing before me
brought to life by the light of the full moon outside
i stepped out of the sandstone structure i was sleeping in
but he fades back to earth with a message that i hear so clear
i hear mother say

help me
hear me
heal me
don't leave me to die
see me
feel me
love me
i gave you life

now the pockets of those that don't see straight are lined with their profits
claiming them to win
to be fit to survive
yeah
your coins fast becoming natural selection
are we killing our soul
oh for a shot a better say
and i hear mother say

I gave you life
And don't leave us here
stuck here alone without no one to answer when we call home
Why are we here? Living in fear of our very own soul
